The Staff

The Editorial Base at The University Of Nottingham acts as the hub for a worldwide group of Professors, Doctors, Researchers and Assistants.

Editors

Editors' Role

A key editor, assigned to the review team from the very start of their work, works alongside those reviewers. He supports them as they produce the protocol, the review, replies to comments and criticisms. He also helps them maintain their review in light of new evidence.

The exception to this the role of the criticism editor who specifically works on incoming written appraisal of the reviews. She works with the authors of the comments in order to structure their work for publication on The Cochrane Library. The criticism editor also liaises with the relevant key reviewer and editor to make sure that the comment(s) are adequately addressed.

Clive Adams

Professional background
Born in rural Ulster, educated in Belfast. Qualified in medicine in Queens University, Belfast in 1983, after two years of casualty and surgery began psychiatry in Bradford. Completed training in the Guys, London. After a research year undertook epidemiology MSc in the London School of Hygiene in Tropical Medicine. Founded the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group entity whilst at Oxford University, has seen successful periods both at Oxford, Leeds and is now residing in Nottingham. Proud partner to Leila and father to Sam and Beth.

Job duties
The work of the Coordinating Editor is to keep everything in the group moving. I help reviewers, editors, Administration/Coordinators and Trial Search Coordinators and any of those doing research with the group in order that they complete their tasks as sufficiently and smoothly as possible. This generally involves working alongside the Trial Search Co-ordinator to ensure that the searches are comphrensive and as efficiently undertaken as is possible, helping the trial locator physically acquire studies. Seeking funding is essential in order to keep the group going, working alongside reviewers and the other editors to help steer the group. Another part of my job is to help disseminate this work partly by academic papers and also oral presentations.

Undertaking a systematic review

Undertaking a systematic review

Interested parties contact the CSG to register themselves as reviewers and propose a title for a protocol to be developed. Registered reviewers are sent to a training workshop for 'Developing a protocol for a review', and later to one providing instruction in the use of Review Manager software, the programme in which Cochrane Collaboration reviews are written and published.

Protocols are expected be submitted within one year after registration of a title. The CSG editorial base and the designated key editor provide ongoing support as necessary throughout the development of the protocol. Following submission, the protocol is peer reviewed by an anonymous editor and processed for publication at the editorial base.

Reviews are generally expected to be submitted for publication one year after publication of the protocol. The editorial process as described for the protocol is repeated, and reviewers are additionally encouraged to seek further expert peer review.

Reviewers are responsible for periodical updating of their reviews, at least once a year. If obvious studies become available in the interim, the key editor would encourage earlier incorporation of these data. All updates are handled as described above for the initial submission of a review.
